Happy birthday behind the clouds

gone but memories evergreen.

Thank you for the times we had. 

Today would have been another birthday,
a day to gather together at Adelabu in the evening,
a day to have a taste of your humour.
continue to rest in peace.
you taught me to make family a priority.
you touched virtually every life in the larger Olaitan family.

In 1970 my wife, then 3 year old daughter and I moved to Lagos to join USAID. Sam had studied biochemistry with my brother Alan at UCLA and my brother. told me I must look up Sam. It was the very best advice he ever gave me. Sam and Funlayo took us under their wings and made us feel so welcome. Sam invited us to Ade Remo where we attended one of the most beautiful religious services we had ever been privileged to witness. We exchanged a number of home visits. Met through Sam a number of outstanding academics at the University of Lagos. And Sam even had me with him during a Christening party at the then Chief of Staff of the Nigerian military. We were so impressed with Funlayo and Sam. Her large school was a full time job all by itself. He had so many simultaneous leadership responsibilities in academia, community and religious life.  It is a wonder he had time to devote to warm and memberable friendships. He was so very special. I am so pleased that the family has established this living memorial for a truly outstanding person.
